After a titanic battle it took extra time to separate our Minor lads from amalgamation side Carnlough Gaels under the lights in Dunganny last night. They got off a perfect start with goals from Bradley Bregley, Kayden Plunkett, and Kian Campbell as they took in a 6-point lead to the dressing rooms at the interval.
The second half saw the amalgamation outfit take control and score two goals of their own as they reversed the half-time deficit to a five-point lead with 5 minutes remaining. As usual our lads then showed the heart and desire that they’re known for. Two sublime pointed efforts from Kayden Plunkett left Kian Campbell an opportunity to level it with a monster 55-yard two pointer free from the ground, and it sailed over. Extra time ensued as Charlie O’Donnell levelled it again in the second period. But with cramps occurring all over the field Carnlough found their shooting range and added late scores to settle it.
It ended in a three-point defeat for our lads which only tells a small part of their story and journey. They have done themselves, their families, and their club so proud. That journey started for them in our first ever Under 6 Nursery in 2013. A journey that saw them grow from boys to men as they rode a rollercoaster of emotions along the way which brought far more ups than downs. Conquering Division 5, then conquering Division 4, and yesterday contesting a Division 3 final. It is a testament to their progress, skill, and heart.
Huge thanks to the lads themselves who brought us so many wonderful days over the years. Thanks to all the various coaches who guided them along the way, most presently Eoin Treacy and Padraig Condon. Thanks to their sponsors, particularly SME PLANT SALES and Managing Director Michéal O’Leary. The lads looked superb in their half-zips for yesterday’ final. And finally, thanks to the parents for all their support, encouragement, and driving all over the Royal County. Your sons are a credit to everyone connected to them.
